Bear Fence Hiking Trail

https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/bearfence-rock-scramble.htm

This is a great hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains because of the views at the top, however, there is a part where you must shimmy up some rocks.  I had my husband help push me a bit.  It really wasn’t that hard, and I treated myself to an ice cream cone once back in C’ville, guilt free!! 1.4 hours round trip.

Stop at Jack’s Shop Kitchen in Ruckersville on the way home for a delicious late lunch or snack!

Crab Tree Falls Hiking Trail

https://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/crabtree-falls-trail.htm

Everyone likes waterfalls, and this one is one of the biggest on the east coast.  Very important to stay on the hiking path even though the water calls!  It can be very slippery.  I like to stop at the charming Greenwood Market for delicious sandwiches to take along for a picnic before or after your hike.  1.5-2.5 hours round trip and is moderately strenuous.  Great on a hot day!

Blue Hole Hike

https://healthyincville.wordpress.com/2011/09/02/hike-to-blue-hole/

This one is my favorite.  It’s easy and at the top there is a fantastic swimming hole!  Wear shoes that can get wet because there are some creeks to cross from time to time.  If you are brave (I’m not!), give the rope swing a try!!  It’s also a great place to have a picnic.  Pick up Bodo’s Bagels sandwiches (best in C’ville), chips and water bottles and you’ll be all set!  3 miles total up and back.

Carters Mountain

People come from all over Virginia to visit Carter’s Mountain.  The views of the Blue Ridge Mountains for as far as you can see make for great pictures.  The charming red barn is filled with homemade apple pies (made from the apples grown there!), apple cinnamon doughnuts (one is never enough!) and all things Virginia.  It will be peach season in June!

Saunders Trail at Monticello

https://www.monticello.org/visit/the-saunders-monticello-trail/

I walk this trail at least 3 times a week.  It’s boarded, has a spectacular view and is moderate with a total of 4 miles.  Don’t miss the Monticello gift shop before you leave.

Simeon Market

This market is so adorable and filled with so many wonderful gifts, chocolates, cookies, and wine.  It’s housed in an old stone gas station.  The sandwiches and salads are all freshly made and are delicious.  The chicken salad is the best in town!  3 minutes from the Monticello.

Rivanna River Company

Tubbing or kayaking is fun for the whole family!  Head to the RRC in C’ville with a picnic (in a cooler) and drinks and meander the Rivanna River for 3-4 hours.  It’s perfect on a warm day. The river is generally shallow, so swimming is an option as well.  Wear your sunscreen!

Hogwaller Brewing Company

Cute new place right at the entrance of the Rivanna River Co.  I was there the other day, and my cheeseburger was delicious!  I didn’t indulge in the fries, but they sure looked good.  Fun bar seating but outdoor seating is available during the warmer months.  Yummy!
